Research landscape of the Berlin-Brandenburg region

The research landscape of the German capital region hosts the highest density of research institutions and the largest number of scientists in Germany. It thus offers an ideal environment for young scientists aiming at broadening their cooperation network.

In addition to the eight State universities, a large number of non-university research institutions are located in Brandenburg. Among them are institutions of each of the four large German research associations: 4 institutions of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, 4 institutions of the Helmholtz Association of German research centers, 9 institutions of the Leibniz Association and 3 institutions of the Max Planck Society.

For more information on the non-university research institutions in Brandenburg please visit the section “research” (Forschung) on these websites of the Ministry of Sciences, Research and Cultural Affairs and follow the links to the individual webpages of these institutions.

More information on research institutions in Berlin can be found on the webpages of the State of Berlin (
